Question Reading tab question

Danny, on the lesson marked "Tablature Rythm Charts" you show a bit of Stairway tab which has the chord name written above the tab. You say in the lesson that we should put our fingers on the chord shape and pick where the tab tells us too. But, as in this case and in the case of a lot of tab, if we maintain the chord shape finger positions, we cannot pick what the tab tells us too. If you wonder what I am talking about, go to the song and put your finger on and open C and try to do the first part. It can't be done. So, could you explain whatever it is that I am not understanding. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
