Default Why am I learning scales?

I am learning these scales but I don't really know why. I dont care too much about improvising. A lot of it sounds like an angry bumble bee.

Also, your method of teaching scales centers around the CAGED bar chords. But this other book I have centers around "positions" and root notes. Which is better and why?

BTW I used to hate bar chords but now I love them. I can sound a lot cooler with left hand muting now.
