To understand this, you need to know how chords are constructed. To know how chords are constructed, it is necessary to know the Major scale.
Learn about the Major scale here

A Major chord is constructed from the first, third and fifth notes of the Major scale. This means that a C Major chord consists of only the notes C, E and G played together.

A minor chord consists of the first, third flat and fifth notes of the Major scale played together. This means that a C minor chord consists of the notes C, Eb and G played together.

A 7th chord consists of the first, third, fifth and seventh notes all played together. This means that a CMajor7 chord consists of the first, third, fifth and seventh notes of the scale.
