I don't believe anyone can answer that for you. You have to decide where you want to take your playing and what's the best way to get it there. For example, if you're only interested in learning to play songs by your favourite bands (don't get me wrong, that's perfectly all right), then, there's no real need to learn reading sheet music.
However, if you want to take your playing to the next level, beyond just covering songs, it'll probably be easier in the long run to learn some theory. Reading music is still not an obligation but it's actually very helpful.

So yea, it's really up to you and it depends strictly on what your goals are.
