barre chords will open up immense possibilities for you.
I found barre chords impossible to implement at first but I persevered and just spent a couple of minutes a day trying to form chord shapes and strumming away. Each day it gets just a little better until after a few months I am now fairly confident with using barre chords. it really is just practice like everything else. just spend a few minutes each day, it will soon come to you.
As for a F# - well thats easy - you know how to play an E chord in open position? simply barre the first fret and apply the same shape (you will need to use the last 3 fingers instead of the first 3 of course) and you are playing an F chord - move that all up one more fret to barre fret 2 and you have an F# - move it one more fret and you have a G, one more fret and you have G# - can you guess what is at the 5th fret?
