Reading The "A" String (Print Page)

These lines are called ledger lines. They are just an extension of
the staff lines. Ledger lines can go below or above the staff.

The second last note has a dot after it, when you place a dot after a note in music, it means to add on half the value of that note. In this case the dot is placed after a half note which is worth two beats, half of two is one. Now it is simple maths, two plus one is three.
