I wholeheartedly recommend this software. For me it was a real help to learn to play. I used the electric guitar coach.
I was very impressed with the lessons this gave - it shows you how to play a song, then lets you practice with a backing band so that you play the guitar part along with the band when you are ready, you can concentrate on bar by bar pieces and play them slowly or along with another guitarist or when you are ready with the band with you as the guitarist.
Another good thing is that the songs are cool to learn - there is green day (time of your life) Black sabbaths paranoid, Brian Adams, Placebo - etc etc - I cannot endorse it strongly enough.
