Reading The "A" String

Now the notes start to get placed below the staff, and to do this we have to use ledger lines. Ledger lines are just an extension of the staff lines. Ledger lines can go below or above the staff.

In this exercise below the second last note has a dot after it, when you place a dot after a note in music, it means to add on half the value of that note. In this case the dot is placed after a half note which is worth two beats, half of two is one. Now it is simple maths, two plus one is three. So the second last not is worth three beats. That means that you play the note on the first beat and let it ring all the way to the end of the third.
